Command Influence
Command Influence is a fictionalization (largely factual) of a military court martial I defended and won in 1962 while serving in the US Army JAG at Fort Benning, Georgia. It is set in 1962, the coldest of the cold war, and involves Riggs McCall, a maverick Lieutenant who is in disfavor with the army, and his associate in the trial, Lt. John Madison, who has his eyes on the presidency which is obtainable through the machinations of his powerful father. He is appointed to help Riggs, but the General who appointed him commands him to be a spy and torpedo the defense. For some reason, the command will go to any lengths to get a conviction, including this treachery. John is caught in a conflict: his honor and friendship with Riggs on one hand, and the order from the General who is close business friends with his banker father on the other. Riggs doesn’t look back, and attacks—a one man fighting force against the US Army. It is the story of the coming of age morally of two completely different young men confronted with an evil that goes all the way to the White House.
